Hello Also-Known-As Community,
November marks National Adoptee Awareness Month (NAAM), a time to amplify the voices, stories, and leadership of adoptees across generations and around the world. At Also-Known-As, we honor 30 years of community-building among international adoptees from over 23 countries. Our strength has always come from connection: from showing up for one another, sharing our truths, and creating spaces where adoptees are seen, heard and celebrated in full complexity.
This month is also about action and solidarity. I recently saw harrowing news reports of international adoptees with citizenship being questioned about the validity of their documentation, as well as adoptees who will need to self-deport from the US if not granted a pardon. Too many international adoptees are still fighting for what I believe should have been guaranteed from the start: citizenship, pardons, basic rights, and access to resources.
I’d like to lift up the tireless advocacy of Adoptees for Justice (A4J), one of many hardworking organizations working to ensure that every adoptee has the legal recognition and security they deserve.
As a community, we each have a role to play. Together, we can show up, speak up and stand up for ourselves, for one another, and for the generations of adoptees still waiting for justice. This National Adoptee Awareness Month, let’s recommit to amplifying adoptee voices, advancing equity, and celebrating the power of our collective story.
